Hi Berit,
I have gone over the proposal and written the last section... I am very
tired so please read over and check my spelling and make sure it makes
sense!
I will email Brona now and see where I have to go to hand it in as I have
3 meetings (all I do is have meeting it seems!) on the 1st so i am not
sure how I will get to her... maybe we could hand it in tomorrow if it is
all finished?

the foyer. I have to catch a coach from Victoria at 5pm so have to leave

I think the things that you said the other day while filming would
fit here, don't you think? Plus the negative data stuff, I'm sure
Brona grasps that really well.
- If we manage to write everything today, I can put it into the
layout, however it will never fit. Or can you open it in Word?
- Tomorrow I will go to college in the morning and scan and print
everything before we meet. Hopefully I will manage to finish till 2pm.
- I spoke to several people and everyone seems to have a different
opinion about what to hand in. So if you have time to deliver it to
Brona on the 1st that would be great because I don't think that my
friend will go there.
- Could you please bring the book and the bacteria tomorrow and I
put it all in a lovely box

Ok great! Glad you like the idea of the textile maze, think it will be
less hassle constructing also =) As we are going for a "free floating"
maze I do not think a blueprint would be a right call (if you agree?), i
can still do a rough sketch explaining how it might look / work to bring
the viewer in but i think for the poster we should stick to a more general
maze image... what do you think?
If you want to make the actual design and we have the money / time then we
can? I am up for it if we were lucky enough to be chosen?! If not we could
construct a book of ideas like you had at your masters show? And then have
big still images on the walls outside the hidden exits... so say one would
be 3 images, one of a whole suit (for example) then the second would be
bits of a suit and the third would be a pile of animal hair...so like your
first idea?
Yeah deadlines galore at the moment but will feel good when they have passed!

I want to relax and smile =)

the textile maze idea is amazing!! let's do it!
i wonder if, in case we will make this project happen, we actually do
have to make a garment or an armchair...i think with a textile maze
we could "just" produce the big sheets of the textiles and then make
a book about the application ideas. this would bring the maze (the
concept) together with the products all in one installation.
and it would be much easier to calculate.
i am so excited about the textile maze!
oh dear, another deadline for you...good luck and strengh for that.
i do need a break now...some stupid blockbuster or so...

we need three outcomes, please tell me the ones that make most sense to you and/or add your ideas.
i always added an idea for application, one for fashion, one for interior design. i would prefer interior as fashion i don't have a clue about...
1. horse hair: ecoli bacteria not growing, negative data
→ textile that keeps itself always clean by not growing bacteria but it slowly dissolving in the structure
→ fashion: recycling suit, interior design: curtains for example
2. llama felt: a lot of bacteria growing, positive data
→ because of the positive data we decided to go a different way and use WOVEN llama instead, as it is not growing so much as the felt. BUT the bacteria cause a fibre mingling, which means that the textile grows thicker over time and becomes much warmer
→ fashion: summer clothing grows into winter clothing, interior design: a cushion becomes more and more fluffy and soft over the time
3. turkey feathers: bacteria grow very slowly but constantly
→ we cut the feathers into little pieces to make the bacteria grow slower. so now it takes 10 years until they grow a very thick layer. during this time the feathers already dissolve and at the end there is only bacteria. the bacteria forms the garment itself.
→ fashion: a growing garment that changes with the change of the body shape, interior design: a growing armchair
4. pig hair: the hair is so stiff and smooth that no bacteria grows on it, and it doesn't felt or weave
→ the hair needs to be stitched and knotted and it's still stiff and pricky, and bacteria is still not growing
→ fashion: a coat with lotuseffect (the water runs down) that never needs to be cleaned, a spiny awkward design makes it also look like a self-defensive jacket, interior design: outdoor furniture that looks like sea urchins
5. sheep felt: the bacteria grow really well and make the felt dirty within short time. Designwise sheep wool is the easiest to felt but the outcome looks very eco.
→ the wool needs to be treated to make it more smooth and growing less bacteria

anything. they could dye the textile pink over the time, if that is
useful for us. sorry for not being more specific..still in process..

up to you how you visualize the maze. i would just draw a circle
thing, but really, do as you imagine it.

i just realized that there is a negative data aspect in the textile

its structure is really fragile. i am doing now a series of the horse
hair image, slowly dissolving as the structure doesn't stay for long.
so it could be a textile that keeps itself clean and gets back to its
original stage, so it can be re-used over and over again. does that
make sense to you?
we could also say that the bacteria do something specific as you

Hi Berit, I have gone over the draft so far and added / changed some
stuff... se what you think.
I am still not sure if we are expected to actually produce an A2 poster
because I cant imagine Brona wanting 30 posters in her office but I guess
if the guidelines are not overly clear then we are free to interpret how
we wish so if you think we have time to make the poster then i am more
then happy to do so =)
I also thought the form was a set layout as it would make it easier for
them to compare the proposals... i think we should generally fill the form
out as it is (especially as it has word limits) and sign the bottom. I
have still got to give my acceptance form cos for some reason it will not
email the image so better include that too!
For the design drawing are we submitting a jpeg of the actual made poster
or a kind of blueprint for the maze installation? I can work on the
sketches tonight and tomorrow if we are doing a sketch of the actual maze?
As for handing in, if your friend is ok to do it then that's great but I
can try and sort something out if not...?!

attached a start of the proposal, all belonging to point 2 of the
form. sorry for all the gaps and weird descriptions or definitions,
hope it makes sense to you.
please edit, add and delete...the negative data definition is hard
for me everytime again...one day i think i understood it, the next
day it's gone again...and if you think all is complete rubbish and
you can't agree any of it, its fine :)
also attached two possible layouts for the front side of the poster.
please don't pay attention to the blurry image, it is just a
replacement for a proper maze drawing.
sorry i should have explained it better: yes, i mean to print out an
A2 poster and glue it on one side of a board. then physically drill
holes in the board. on the other side of the board these holes lead
to three different design objects/ideas.
by that we would communicate the maze on the front, which is the main
part as we are designing a process, and possible design outcomes on
the backside.
i understand the guidelines like this:
hand in
- a printed a2 poster with the design/concept in whatever form (can
be a drawing, photo, collage, material, filmstills,...)
- the form (but we should do our own layout for that) with our both
signages
- the design proposal illustration as high res tiffs and low res jpgs
i am quite good at layouting and putting the images together,
printing an glueing and so on...
if you do the description for the installation could you also attach
some sketches or illustrations about how you imagine it to look like?
i can scan them in at my friends house.
i don't really know how to manage the hand in. we definetely have to
bring it there, as it will be printed out and a2 by post will be
expensive as well. i won't be in london on the 1st. if you have time
to deliver it that's fine but otherwise i can ask my friend to hand
it in together with hers. she is living close to my house and i would
just bring it to her on 29th morning.
sorry i am quite perfectionist about the final layout and design
stuff, but i am very happy to do it :)
no worries, we have both our lives and are very busy. thats good i

I am not sure what you mean by the A2 poster... I thought we had to hand in the written proposal form and a sketch (in A2 formatt and size) of the design or designs... I did not think we were making a poster as such... Maybe we could though... I have a poster template on powerpoint?!
I have some culture photos and am just waiting to be able to upload them and then I'll send them to you.
I am glad you like the maze idea... I am finding it hard to visualise what you mean by punch a hole... Very hard to understand via email... So sorry I haven't come back to you earlier, it was a mad week. Will
be back to London tomorrow afternoon and back to drawing stuff etc.
Until then I am going to write something into the proposal form and
send it to you tonight.
Thanks so much for your work and doing the blog! I will add photos
and the links I have been collecting in the next days if you could
give me permission and the password please. Also I found some
definitions of "negative data", and some interesting articles about
the publishing of it. I think it would be really nice if we both
could define it ourselves and put it as statements onto the A2 poster.
If you have any photos taken of the growing bacteria or so, please
send them to me.

I was going over this nobelini stuff on Sunday and am finding it really hard to understand your concept of positive and negative working together in a tangible piece of design... Negative and positive generally go hand in hand I guess but... So I shall stumble through and try to explain what I think might work...
Firstly we HAVE to have this proposal finished by Friday as I am way this weekend (as are you) and cant work on it then..
For a theme I think we are either stem cells of sythetic systems.... Maybe more systems.
I have been trying to come up with a design concept to display our thinking... I still really urge us to make something which communicates the idea in an interactive manner, I do not think making something people just look at is something we should even entertain the thought of.
As our work has been a kind of thinking process which we have wondered through and engaged with I think it would be fitting to make a maze of thoughts... So at the start you would begin with the starting question and then have to follow the results around until it reached it's end. As we are pushing this negative data idea I think the 'end' of the maze should be a dead end but as we are saying negative data can be interesting and important in its own right I think the 'dead end' should have a secret exit which could then display a piece which applys this negative finding, like the suit or sofat type of idea u mentioned?

the problem is that i hate the tube and try to avoid it as much as i
can...
or we can meet at bank station and take the DLR to Mudchute station
which would be the quickest, around 45 minutes.
if you can we can go a bit earlier and have a coffee, surrounded by
children and horses at the farm, and discuss ideas.

Design course at St. Martins. I am participating a project called

analysis of different textile materials. We found out that the
materials like hair and fur need to be as "fresh" as possible, and
most of the materials to buy are already treated somehow. So we are
looking for all sorts of animal hair for felting textile samples. Do
you think there would be a possibility to get some from your horses,
pigs, lamas or even guinea pigs? I collected some from the fences
yesterday but it wasn't a big amount ...and the pigs don't really
leave any hair at the fence :) I am not sure, but maybe you brush or
shear them from time to time?
Also the process of this project is going to be documented on video.
Therefore we will do some filming next Monday 11th around 1pm at the
farm which Andrew said already it is ok.
I was wondering if one or two of you would be up for "live-animal-
brushing" to collect the hairs.
I know that all might sound a bit crazy :) But I really liked the
farm and it would be great if you would help us out in any way.

What a great idea! That would be really good as a location definitely, and it sounds like you've got a great plan for your research. I've heard of that farm though never been- and it's no problem for me to get there.
If your friend would be available to record sound, that would be great. I would imagine that it will be a good place for animal noises etc, and it would be much better to capture the sound well.
I'll make myself free for the whole day- just let me know how you get on with the fur/hair question, and what sort of time you'd like to start.

Re location, it's up to you two where you'd like to do it- if it's a case of presenting your work (not formally, i just mean how it's seen on the film)- up to you! Be creative..?! Maybe there's an aspect of the project that would lend itself to an interesting location...

I am back now, fresh and up for doing some nobelini work :) I think

much more common and even welcomed to document failures. Fail

Really sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you! I was volunteering at the Cheltenam science festival so was away from my computer. Yeah I remember you and I am happy with the pairing =) Glad you are too! Think we can make something exciting together! When were you thinking we should meet up?
